We called in before heading off to a concert at the O2 and found ourselves in what felt like a glorious time warp. Marble counters, wooden benches, spotless floors and the sort of atmosphere that makes you wonder whether you’ve accidentally wandered into 1958 and are all the better for it.

I ordered the steak pie with mash and gravy. Now, I’ve eaten pies that contained so little meat you needed a search warrant to find it. This wasn’t one of those. This pie was packed with flavour and proper chunks of beef. The mash was smooth, the gravy rich and generous, and the whole thing disappeared at a speed that would have alarmed my doctor.

My wife and two teenage daughters chose the beef mince pies and thoroughly enjoyed them. There were also chicken, lamb and vegetarian options available, so nobody is likely to leave hungry unless they’re making a political statement.

Then came the rhubarb crumble and custard. Rhubarb can be a dangerous thing. Get it wrong and it tastes like punishment. Get it right and it’s magnificent. This was magnificent. Sweet, sharp and covered in proper school dinner custard and enough to make a grown man consider ordering a second helping.

The staff were lovely throughout, friendly without being over-familiar, efficient without looking as though they were training for the Olympics. The whole place was immaculately clean.

An added bonus was being able to leave the car outside and take the boat up to the O2, which turned a simple meal into the start of a proper London outing.

Now, as much as I enjoyed Goddard’s, I must confess that I’m an Arments boy at heart. Old loyalties die hard. But credit where it’s due: Goddard’s served up a cracking pie and mash experience, and if you’re anywhere near Greenwich and fancy a taste of London’s past, you’ll leave very happy indeed.
